Blogging101: No regrets

Blogging101’s task of the day is to write a post for my dream reader, and if you’re reading this right now – that’s you!

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

This year, I decided to grab life by the horns. The realisation that life is flying by too fast, that my own big birthday is creeping ever closer and that there are things I want to achieve before then; it was time for change.

Mark Twain’s quote has been in the back of my mind for years, with me taking baby steps in everyday life to do the little things I’ve wanted to do. From a frenzied gnome hunt run by a London jewellers, a crazy colour festival, over-priced dinners, random musical bingo nights, Le Mans 24h, clay pigeon shooting even though I can’t bear the noise, to walking a marathon overnight in memory of my Aunt. Always, with awesome people by my side.

When my sister emigrated over 4000 miles away it just compounded the need to get up and act. Suddenly, all the years I assumed we’d have as my Mum and her sisters had; popping round to each others houses for tea, outings just the two of us, family gatherings, celebrations, commiserations, nearby if we needed each other, facing our older years together and all those other precious things that we take for granted… All gone.

And so it was time for bigger actions, bolder moves, pastures new. Time to do things the way I desired – not what people expected of me, to build the life I want, look after my own happiness and do it now, not later. Life won’t wait.

I decided to fulfil my dream of going on safari in Africa, so I headed off on my own for an experience of a lifetime and it blossomed into a wonderful summer. This is also how my blog came about; I finally had something ‘worthy’ of writing about! And now, I plan to work on my career in a new company – doing, learning and growing. Only dead fish swim with the stream. I’m still dreaming up new ideas and ever-changing plans for the future, but mapping my life out in pencil suits me just fine.

We never know what paths our lives may suddenly take so ‘carpe diem,’ seek what makes you happy – you won’t regret it.
